The most popular music styles at all times: TOP-10

musical genre
Music is an integral part of most people's lives. Musical works are listened to in all corners of our planet, even in the most remote. Despite the enormous popularity and importance of this area of art, many people do not think about the styles and genres of music. In this article about music, I want to look at the top 10 music trends that have not lost their popularity to this day.

What are the music styles?

Let's collect the main styles of music in a separate list, which, according to experts, will always be popular.

1. Pop music

This style belongs to the modern direction of the music. This genre is characterized by simplicity, an interesting instrumental part and a sense of rhythm, while the vocal is not given the most attention. The main and almost the only form of musical compositions is the song. "Pops" includes the characteristics of Europop, Latina, synthpop, dance music, etc.

Music experts highlight such features of pop music:

  •     a conservative scheme for constructing songs “couplets + choruses”;
  •     simplicity and ease of perception of melodies;
  •     the main instrument is the human voice, the accompaniment plays a secondary role;
  •     Rhythmic structure plays an important role: most of the compositions are written for dancing, therefore they are distinguished by a clear, unchanging bit;
  •     the average length of songs is from 3 to 5 minutes, which is fully consistent with the format of modern radio stations;
  •     lyrics are usually dedicated to personal emotions and experiences (love, sadness, joy, etc.);
  •     great importance is the visual representation of works.

2. Rock music

As the name implies, this genre of music is characterized by rhythmic sensations that are associated with a particular movement. Some signs of rock songs (electromusical instruments, creative self-sufficiency, etc.) are secondary, because of which many music styles are mistakenly attributed to rock. Various subcultures are associated with this musical direction: punks, hippies, metallers, emo, goths, etc.

The rock is subdivided into several directions or styles, ranging from “light” pieces of dancing rock-n-roll, pop-rock and brit-pop, ending with brutal and aggressive death metal and grindcore. This genre is characterized by “musical expression”, in particular, by the high dynamics (loudness) of the performance (some songs are played at 120-155 dB).

Usually a rock band usually includes a vocalist, a guitar player (playing an electric guitar), a bass player and a drummer (sometimes a keyboard player). The rhythm section is composed of bass, drums and rhythm guitars (not always).

3. Hip-hop

This musical direction consists of several genres: from “light” styles (pop-rap) to aggressive (hardcore, horrorcore). Lyrics can also have different content - from easy and unconstrained (memories of childhood, adolescence, etc.) to complex social problems.

At the heart of hip-hop are such styles as funk, jazz, reggae, soul and rhythm and blues. Quite often, hip-hop is confused with rap, which is fundamentally wrong. Rap is a recitative performance of musical compositions, while hip-hop may not have a recitative at all.

There are the following subgenres of hip-hop:

  • old school: a relatively simplified recitative, identical in length lines, the constant direction of rhythm and beats;
  •     Newschool: relatively short tracks, more spiritual motives (in the direction of pop music);
  •     gangsta rap: songs about hard life, hooliganism, crime, etc .;
  •     political hip-hop: the texts call for antisocial activities, uniting the society for resolving various internal and external threats;
  •     alternative hip-hop: this direction is based on the styles of funk, jazz, pop-rock, soul, and the compositions are a combination of music with recitative;
  •     g-funk: this style combines pi-funk melodies and deep funk basses (synthesizer filling, subtle sounding of the flute and recitative), diluted with male or female backing vocals;
  •     horrorcore: this direction is distinguished by the greatest "rigidity" and the brutality of the tracks;
  •     southern hip-hop: this style has southern motifs from African and Latin American countries;
  •     grime: characterized by a dark atmosphere of the track, rolling bass and high-speed aggressive reading.

4. Rap

Rap is a rhythmic recitative that is usually read under the beat. Performers of such compositions are rappers or MC. Rap is one of the main components of hip-hop. But this style is used in other genres (drum and bass, pop music, rock, repkor, new metal, etc.).

Rap - music is quite diverse. Songs can be simple, but at the same time interesting and melodic. They are based on a bit - the rhythm of the songs. Often, after each beat, a certain emphasis is made on the clap, snar (clear and short drum beat), percussion (whistles, chains, etc.) or bass drum.

As a musical instrument, keyboard, wind and computer sounds are commonly used.

5. R&B

R&B (rhythm and blues) refers to the song-dance music genre. This style is based on blues and jazz directions of the first half of the twentieth century. A distinctive feature of the genre are dance motifs that encourage listeners to indulge in a dance.

R&B style is dominated by funny tunes that do not carry special philosophical or mental topics.

6. Jazz

This musical direction arose in the late XIX century in the United States. This style of music combines African and European culture.

Distinctive features of this direction are improvisation, sophisticated rhythm (syncopated figures) and unique techniques of rhythmic textures.Jazz also refers to dance music. The compositions are cheerful, give energy and good mood. But unlike R&B, jazz melodies are more relaxed.

7. Instrumental music

The compositions of this music are performed using musical instruments, and the human voice does not take any part in this. MI is solo, ensemble and orchestral.

Instrumental music is one of the best styles “for background”. Melodies based on live instruments and modern hits are ideal for quiet radio stations, and listening to them brings harmony during work and leisure.

8. Folk music

Quite a popular style is folk music related to musical folklore. Compositions are the musical and poetic creative ideas of the people, which are passed down from generation to generation. Traditional melodies are usually created by the rural population. Such musical direction is a significant opposition to popular and academic singing.

The texts are based on various motifs, ranging from warm love relationships to terrible and fearful military events.

9. Electro

Electronic music is a rather wide genre, the melodies of which are created with the help of electronic musical instruments and computer technologies. This style has a different direction, ranging from experimental academic songs, ending with popular electronic dance tracks.

Electronic music combines the sounds produced by electronic technology and electromechanical musical instruments (a telarmonium, a Hammond organ, an electric guitar, a thereminox and a synthesizer).

10. Trance music

Trance music is a type of electronic music, with artificial sounding, special attention to harmonic parts and timbres, as well as a relatively fast pace (from 120 to 150 beats per minute). Usually trance is used for various dance events.

If you start to continue this list, it will be endless as from year to year there are hundreds of different styles and sub-styles. I want to note that the list did not include such styles of music as:

  •      disco
  •      house
  •      techno
  •      country music
  •      lounge
  •      etc.
